The Institute’s Focus and Priorities
IABS3 is focused on a well-defined set of challenges confronting the organizations it serves. The Institute shapes its priorities and research focus through inputs from a group of experienced advisors representing both prospective research sponsors and research partners. This group brings into this forum national defense, homeland security, and related requirements based on their unique perspectives. They then suggest potential solutions that leverage the Institute’s unique ability to formulate coherent, multidisciplinary research efforts across institutional lines.

In designing approaches to answering problems of critical national importance, IABS3 brings together a carefully selected group of scholars from academia, national laboratories, governmental agencies, and private industry. This team insures that Institute leadership and program managers stay abreast of the latest developments in the rapidly evolving field of human factors research, as well as providing current and well-informed insights into the development of prospective research projects that answer sponsor needs.

In its role, the Institute designs and manages projects for a range of sponsors, including federal agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense, state and regional governments, commercial and trade associations, and private sector customers. Projects vary from developing multimodal biometrics technologies for physical and information infrastructure access control, to helping community authorities, residents and businesses better understand the responses of affected populations to significant events.
