The Institute’s Mission

Lab Chimecals and External Contamination

The broad mission of IABS3 is to manage and conduct research on a range of human factors affecting homeland security, national defense, and other operational challenges.

These challenges include, but are not limited to:

  • Understanding better the response of populations and communities to catastrophic events
  • Detecting, analyzing, and understanding threats imposed by certain individuals, groups, and radical movements
  • Integrating biometric technologies into the evolution of security verifications and other capabilities
  • Addressing the influence of the human dimension of warfare

Dual-research focus

The Institute has both a social/behavioral and a biometric/technological focus. Using a dual-research focus in both biometrics and in social systems studies, IABS3 can meet a variety of sponsor requirements in the increasingly important human factors field. The Institute has an unmatched ability to bring together multidisciplinary and inter-institutional teams with a broad range of capabilities to conduct integrated research on behalf of its sponsors.

Some research activities that the Institute focuses on include the following:

  • Modeling responses to catastrophic events, such as hurricanes, to improve preparation and recovery efforts
  • Refining processes and technologies for individual and collective threat detection and analysis
  • Refocusing training and organizational effort on the human dimension of warfare
  • Analyzing the motivational factors for extremists and radical groups
  • Formulating methodologies for mitigation of social and psychological impact of significant disruptive events
  • Developing multimodal, stand-off technologies for the verification of individual identity
