The institute establishes research collaborations across a broad range of expertise from multiple research organizations to address sponsor requirements from a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach.  The composition and functional expertise of the research teams varies based on the particular requirement, but they are characterized by the involvement of research scientists and scholars and with established credentials from highly respected institutions.

ORAU Logo

As a consortium of doctoral-granting academic institutions, ORAU member universities share the common objective of advancing scientific research and education by creating mutually beneficial collaborative partnerships involving academe, government, and industry.  As a non-profit corporation, ORAU operates as a federal contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by targeting three core areas:

  • Worker/public health and independent verification of environmental cleanup
  • Weapons of mass destruction national preparedness and emergency response
  • Science education, workforce development, and scientific review programs

During the past 60 years the ORAU consortium has grown from that original group of 14 universities—all located in the South—to 119 members across the United States as well as in Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom.

ORNL is the Department of Energy’s largest science and energy laboratory.  Managed since April 2000 by a partnership of the University of Tennessee and Battelle, ORNL has a staff of more than 4,200 and annually hosts approximately 3,000 guest researchers who spend two weeks or longer in Oak Ridge. Annual funding exceeds $1.2 billion for this international leader in a range of scientific areas that support the Department of Energy’s mission, ORNL has six major mission roles: neutron science, energy, high-performance computing, systems biology, materials science at the nanoscale, and national security. ORNL is completing a $350 million project, which includes 13 new facilities, to provide a modern campus for the next generation of great science.
